Size, roof style and doors get most of the attention when people design a steel building. Then, at the very end, comes a question that turns out to be harder than expected: what color? Metal building colors are not just decoration. The building will sit in view of your house, your neighbors and every future buyer for decades, and the panels are not something you repaint on a whim. This guide gives you a simple way to choose a combination you will not get tired of.
A steel building has three color decisions, and thinking of them separately makes the choice easier:
We offer 20 color options, including a range of grays, whites, reds and blues, and you can mix panel and trim colors to match your property. Carports have a roof and trim only, unless you add side panels.
The safest way to pick a building color is to borrow from what is next to it.
On rural properties with several outbuildings, consistency matters more than any single color: one roof color across every building looks planned.
Wainscot is a band of contrasting panels along the lower part of the walls, usually around three feet high, with the main wall color above it. It does three useful things: it breaks up a tall, plain wall; it puts a darker, more forgiving color where mud and mower clippings hit; and it makes a garage or shop look more like a finished building than a shed. Several of the garages we install are designed with wainscot, in both horizontal and vertical panel layouts.
A good rule: use a darker color for the wainscot than for the wall above, and match the wainscot to the roof or the trim so the building uses no more than three colors in total.
Some subdivisions and homeowner associations have covenants that require outbuildings to match the house or limit the palette. A few municipalities have appearance standards for accessory buildings as well. It takes one phone call to find out, and it is much easier to make that call before the building is ordered.
Neutrals such as white, gray and tan are consistently common because they suit most houses and landscapes. Red remains a favorite for barns and farm buildings.
Dark panels absorb more solar heat than light ones, so an uninsulated dark building runs warmer in direct summer sun. Insulation and ventilation reduce the difference.
Yes. Roof, wall and trim colors can be mixed, and a wainscot band can add a further accent.
It can, with proper preparation and paint made for coated metal, but it is a significant job on a full building. It is better to choose a combination you are confident in from the start.
